Writer’s block is something all songwriters face.

Sometimes for days, weeks, or months, I feel your pain! Here are 5 ways I get the creative juices flowing when I feel like I’ve lost inspiration:

Learn How to Conquer Writer’s Block, the Smart Way

1. How Watching TV Really Inspires You

Right now, I am obsessed with the show Nashville. I’ll jot down lines from the show and use them in my songs all the time. The relationships in the show are also fantastic inspiration! I recommend sitting down with a bowl of popcorn, pencil, and pad and just let the songs write themselves!

2. How Movement Can Generates Fresh Ideas

Some of my favorite ideas have come to me while I’m running. There’s something about getting the blood flowing that helps me think clearer and takes away some of the pressure I feel to constantly be making music. If running isn’t your thing maybe try dancing, yoga, or swimming! Anything to get yourself active.

3. How Long Have You Gone Without Your Morning Pages?

One Page A Day Keeps The Songwriting Doctor Away

songwriting advice

I first started free writing a couple of years ago in a songwriting summer camp! I remember writing down, “I have no idea what to write about”, but eventually I started to write what I was feeling in the moment.

The process of letting go and getting out all your feelings is the perfect foundation for a song.

Even not knowing how you feel is a great subject for a song and one I’m sure a lot of people can relate to, so come on! Grab a pen and paper. You have no excuses!

4. Where Do I Find Cool Collaborators?

Beats are a new writing tool for me. It was just this last month that I starting writing lyrics over them, but I love it. It is almost like collaborating with another songwriter because the beats tell their own story. They can be seriously inspiring. I suggest checking out BeatStars where you can find a lot of beats for free!

5. What Your Music School Didn’t Teach You

How Appetite Affects Creativity

Seriously, sometimes igniting the senses works. Our sense of taste and our memory are so intertwined. For example, whenever I smell brownies I am taken back to weekends with my big sister when she would tell me all about her boy problems and I couldn’t wait to be her age! Oh if only I knew back then what a headache boys are.

Memories can become songs, and good ones at that. Give it a shot and let me know how it goes!

Finally, please be kind and gentle to yourself. Writer’s block is something we all experience. It gets better and soon you’ll start writing again!
