Learn how to get better results when texting.

BRB… OMW… ♥️. The secret is out: we all love to text! It’s practically second nature to us. So when a friend or client asks us to text them, sometimes it’s confusing where the line is on staying professional in a more casual environment. Here are our top 4 tips to better texting etiquette!

1. How to Improve Your Conversations

Texting was originally intended for short confirmation messages however, today we conduct entire conversations via text. It’s wild! What if we approached texting like a mini email? What if we spent an extra minute to craft our thoughts and questions? It starts with you. Let’s promote a culture that helps everyone communicate better.

Before you hit send, here are some helpful reminders:

  • Be courteous by adding a short intro greeting.
  • Ask and answer in complete sentences.
  • Did you proofread and spell check?
  • Is shouting in ALL CAPS really necessary?

Should You Call or Text?

Texting is often seen as the ultimate form of convenience, but it shouldn’t be used for every scenario. For example, if you need to tell somebody something very important or time-sensitive such as a new deadline for an assignment or a sudden need to call out of work, you should instead pick up the phone and CALL them.

By calling someone instead of texting, it shows you take initiative and that you care.

What if they don’t answer? If it’s very time-sensitive, sending a quick text is a great idea.

3. Wait! How Many Texts Did You Send? 👀

Even your grandparents know that’s bad!

Let’s train the world to be patient.

Your friends won’t always see or respond to text messages as fast as you’d like them to. It might take an hour or two, but you’ll always get an answer back eventually. While you’re at it, try not to send too many messages either as to not be overwhelming. After all, no one wants to get the dreaded multi text 😲. Instead of focusing on the response, get some work done or take some time to relax!

4. When and How Do You Say Goodbye?

Once you have gotten the answer or response you needed, don’t be afraid to end the conversation with a “thank you!”, or a “Bye, Talk Soon”.

That way nobody feels pressured to keep talking even though the conversation is over. It makes sense that people feel a need to continue talking, or awkward if they stop the conversation because there are no visible social cues to guide you.

Instead of thinking about it as a discussion, try to imagine it being like a passing conversation where you stop to talk to somebody for a couple of minutes and go your separate ways until you meet up with them again. Setting boundaries in the texting world is necessary for closing the small daily chapters in our life.

Summary:

Congrats on getting this far! Now is the time to clean up your texting act when dealing with work stuff. How will you take steps to change how you communicate with colleagues? I’d love to hear from you!
